1).Several personnel have been awarded international scholarships by the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft GmbH to undergo intensive training in Germany on Industrial Biotechnology. The highlight of the training is the 3-4 month internship in a forensic laboratory. Kristina Tabbada and Liza Faustino worked on X-STRs and mitochondrial DNA sequencing with Dr. Peter Schneider at the University of Mainz in 2002. In 2001, Michelle Magno-Tan and Gayvelline Calacal worked with Dr. Lutz Roewer of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Humboldt University in Berlin on polymorphic Y markers of the Filipino population.

In line with the current deliberation in Congress and the Senate on the abolition of Death Penalty, Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria was asked to work with the Anti-death Penalty Task Force on the topic of ‘Errors in Conviction’. Their main task is to gather relevant information that will be used in lobbying for the repeal of the Death Penalty.

In addition, Dr. Maria Corazon A. De Ungria was invited by the National Academy of Science and Technology to lead the DNA Forensic group in evaluating the effect of the Human Genome Project in the field of forensic. Results of the round table discussions will be presented to the National Research Council Meeting in March 2003.

Due to the expanding size of the population genetic database being maintained at the UP-DNA lab and the increasing number of client-based services, we sent Miriam Ruth Dalet for further training in MS Access conducted by the Statistical Research and Training Center in Quezon City, Philippines.
